A delayed blog post, this was meant to be posted afew days ago but oh well:
It's funny, in Australia I identify myself more as a Greek. The second I set foot overseas I become as Aussie as vegemite... I hate vegemite too btw.
We also had a running joke about the local beer they had in vienna. The ubiquitous brand was 'Ottakringer', so we thought, what's the most Aussie Bogan slogan we could give it. So in the end it was "Ottakringer - get it in ya". Everytime we'd be having a pint of that, we'd always say that in the weirdest backward redneck Bogan way possible... And people would stare.. So much staring.
Not as bad as me using my fragmented German at inappropriate times - "Ja Vol" means "yes sir", but is only really used in a military context. So when waiters would ask yes/no questions, we'd have a laugh at the fact that we'd respond with Ja vol.. And by we I mean mainly me.
Though nothing topped the night I had the most to drink since I'd been on this trip: several pints of Ottakringer and a couple shots, and we were sitting on the benches outside the bar and staff came to clear our table of empty shot glasses, but I thought they were going to take my beer as well. So in a panic, I pounce onto my glass and yell "Nein!", to the poor staff members' shock. Yeah, they didn't come by our table again the rest of the night, but at least I kept my beer!
In other exciting news - I finally got my accommodation offer for Sweden - a studio apartment with Internet, kitchen, WC and shower all to myself. I was starting to freak out a bit over the fact that I may have had to search for accommodation on my own.. A little hard when I'm travelling all over the place for the next month or so before semester starts. Anyways that's all sorted, I just need to accept the offer.
I've also written some music - on the last day in Budapest, while others were doing their own thing, I chose to sit somewhere scenic and just immersed myself in the surroundings (how pretentiously artsy of me, right?). But if my singer's reading this post, he'll be happy to know I have many more ideas for other compositions and compilations. Potato Island will resurface in 2014 bigger and stronger than ever :)
